Understanding Paychecks in the United States
Every paycheck in the U.S. goes through a set of mandatory deductions before it reaches an employee’s bank account. These typically include federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare — often grouped together as FICA taxes. Try our California, Texas, or Florida calculators to see exactly how these deductions play out in your state.
The federal system is progressive, so different portions of your income are taxed at increasing rates as you earn more. Social Security withholding sits around 6.2% of wages, and Medicare adds roughly 1.45% on top. States such as New York, New Jersey, and Illinois layer their own state income tax on top of these federal amounts, while Washington applies a separate Long-Term Care payroll contribution.
Not every state taxes income the same way — some, like Texas and Florida, charge no state income tax at all. Wyoming and South Dakota follow the same approach, which is why paychecks there tend to go further. States like Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, on the other hand, use their own progressive rate structures — so your final take-home pay can look quite different depending on where you live.
